LA Blythe Street out reach
From:Maritza  3/31/04

On behalf of the Blythe Street neighborhood we write this report to thank the volunteers and the Tzu Chi Clinic for bringing these needed services once again.

The majority of families on Blythe Street are medically indigent and those especially affected are immigrant children and parents who cannot even receive medi-cal. Due to this, people donˇ¦t go to receive preventative health services, but go to receive care once their condition has become unbearable. During the planning of this event we realized how much medical services are needed throughout the valley and not just in the Blythe Street community, because of this realization outreach was done in all of the San Fernando Valley beginning with the various schools found within radius.

The morning of the event things went very well. While set up of the tents was taking place, Blythe Street families were already lining up outside at around 7am to ensure treatment for them and their children. The clinic officially began at around 8:45am with registering. There was a registration table, nurseˇ¦s station, Obstetrician services for children through the UCLA vision mobile, Family medicine, Acupuncture, Dental, Pharmacy, OBGYN, and haircutting in which about 115 individuals received haircuts. After patients were helped they received gift bags of detergent. There was also a childrenˇ¦s area where kids where cared for and entertained with games and activities.

Tzu Chi not only addresses the medical needs of the community but is also very caring to all the patients and volunteers involved. The youth who volunteered at the event were also very helpful and set a wonderful example to the Blythe Street youth.

Overall the event was well organized and efficiently executed.  We thank all the doctorˇ¦s and volunteers for bringing these services in such a compassionate manner.
